Sunderland Flames 6 - Barnsley Ladies 43
Ladies progress to Quarter Finals of Intermediate Cup
Barnsley Ladies started 2018 with a win away at Sunderland in the last 16 of the RFU Women's Intermediate Cup.
Sunderland eager to show that they were better than the 58-0 defeat they suffered at Barnsley took the first opportunity to put points on the board in the first minute when Barnsley were penalised for offside straight from the kick off.
Barnsley just went about their business as usual and steadily applied pressure forcing Sunderland back into their own half. Barnsley's pressure finally told on 12 minutes when Katie England broke through the defence to score although the resulting conversion by Alx Taylor was unsuccessful.
Barnsley kept the pressure on keeping the home team mostly in their half , but Sunderlands's defence held firm, they made a couple of attacks but never really threatened the Barnsley goal line. Sunderland were awarded another penalty and once again elected to kick for goal and once again took the lead after 25 minutes.
A second try from Katie England 5 minutes later restored Barnsley's Lead but Once again Alix Taylors conversion missed this time hitting the upright and bouncing back.
Barnsley started to turn the screw and just before half time Jess Roberts scored a touched down, this time Alix Taylor's kick was good.
HALF TIME: Sunderland 6 - Barnsley 17
The second half saw Barnsley keep up the pressure and 4 minutes in saw Barnsley's top try scorer Fran Copley sprint down the wing to score her 15th try of the season. Again Alix Taylor converted the kick.
Straight from the resulting kick off barnsley went on the attack and some great forward play and a dummy run from Dawn Woodcock opened up a gap to allow Alix Taylor to score and then kick the resulting conversion.
Barnsley's forwards kept Sunderland on the back foot and 2 more tries from Sarah Hill and Georgia Staples extended the lead with Alix Taylor kicking one more conversion.
