Barnsley 57 v West Bridgford 5
Ladies rampant in their first outing of the season
Barnsley Ladies looked comfortable in their one and only friendly of the season, with a 57 points to 5 victory over West Bridgford.
Barnsley have replaced the visitors in National Championship North this season after West Bridgford were relegated last season, so it was a bit of a litmus test to see how the ladies would fair.
West Bridgford were extremely good at the breakdown and Barnsley had to work hard to counter them and this is probably an area where they need to work on.
Leonora Salvucci opened the scoring after on 3 minutes when she sprinted down the wing to touch down.
Playing four 20 minute periods rather than the regulation 40 minute halves, Barnsley made some changes in the second period putting on some new players to the team and immediately one of the debutantes, Tara Moxon made an impact scoring a try after only being on the field 2 minutes with a darting run. 10 minutes later she repeated the feat turning the West Bridgford defenders inside out with another jinking run.
West Bridgford scored a try after a couple of missed tackles but this was the only time they troubled the Barnsley try line. jess Roberts extended Barnsleys lead with one of her now trademark quick tap penalties that left the napping West Bridgford defence standing.
Barnsley's scrum was solid a testament to the work that has been done pre-season and even when the front row changed after a couple of shaky scrums they regrouped and dominated that phase of play again.
Georgia Staples playing her first match as hooker scored with a powerful run. Lucy Eastwood playing her first ever game of Rugby Union after playing League scored after taking a pass at speed leaving the Defence flat footed.
The front row props then both got in on the action with both Dawn Woodcock and Sally Wenham driving over the line to score tries.
The try scoring was rounded off when Rosie Whittaker scored with the best passage support play and passing in the match. Alix Taylor was once again influential with her kicking converting 6 kicks.
The season proper kicks off next week when Barnsley hosts Eccles at Shaw Lane kick off 3pm.
