Club Development - Playing

Barnstaple RFC strives to play the best rugby it possibly can and to provide the best possible facilities to its members and supporters.

On the playing side Barnstaple RFC has been very successful over the years in developing players to play in its 1st XV. This has meant that the teams representing the club have been full of local players who have come up through the club ranks. This is beneficial in terms of the commitment players make to the club and also enhances the experience of the spectators who will identify much more closely with local players.

In order to maintain this flow of players the club identified three key things that it needed to do:
  • firstly it was to improve the playing numbers and results within the Colts team - this was acheived through the introdcutrion of a new coaching team which revitalised the Colts, improved player retention and re-established the Colts as the primary link between the junior and senior teams
  • secondly it was to improve the quality of coaching within the Junior Section through the introduction of a permanent U16s coach to work with the coaches coming through the age groups, and by continuing coach development - this element is very much an ongoing activity
  • thirdly the club decided to introduce a youth academy, the Barnstaple RFC Academy, for the region's most talented young players.
The sucess of the club has put pressure on the facilities especially pitches and changing rooms. The club as a whole has three senior teams, a colts team, ten boys teams and two girls teams. This is great for Barnstaple rugby but with only three pitches it caused real headaches in terms of pitch allocation and maintenance (and the problem only gets worse as the winter sets in)! Already the space allocated to each team is compromised and overall wear and tear on the pitches is very high. The Junior Section has the support to provide rugby to many more youngsters but is limited by the pitch availability at the club.

This situation is set to improve dramatically with the acquisition of a new field adjacent to the existing pitches and the provision of additional changing facilities in the Pavilion.
