A warm summer day in Ilfracoombe was the venue for the Buccaneers penultimate game of the season, unfortunatly Ilfracoombe could not raise a front row so it was uncontested scrums from the start, this impacted on the usually strong Buccaneers scrum but ensured a fast running game and it was within the first five minutes when Jose Mateo got on the end of a brilliant passage of play to score the first Buccaneers try in the corner, the conversion was missed and the score was 0-5.
An even period of play followed with both sides having good breaks but never being able to cross the whitewash due to staunch defence. Grant pinned Ilfracoombe back into their own 22 from a penalty, a superb lineout taken by Steve White was quickly driven over the line and the prop Paul Newman
dropped over for a try, converted by Matt Brayley
to make the score 0-12.
Just before half time Ilfracoombe made a series of strong drives then got the ball out to the right wing for a sore that was converted 7-12.
At half time three substitutions ensured fresh legs and some great phases drove the ball up to the Ilfracoombe 10yards line were they gave away a penalty, quick thinking from Janes Owen who took a quick tap and dashed the 40 meters to cross the line between the posts, this was converted by Matt Brayley
to make the score 19-7.
This got the Ilfracoombe hackles up and it wasnt long before they crossed the line, the conversion was missed and the score was now a close 12-19.
A torrid ten minutes passed with both sides giving their all to try and win but it was the Buccaneers who held on to finish 12-19.
A great game against a mixed Ilfracoombe team ensured a stern test for the Buccaneers who now look like finishing top.
