Great Team Performance!!
We travelled up to Millom on a red hot 27 degrees Sunday morning ready for a really tough game with Millom.
Everyone was in fine fettle and raring to go and it couldn’t have been a better day for it.
Millom are a big side. I remember thinking to myself they are all the same size! And they ran strong.
We started off by kicking off to them and they came out of the blocks really well, driving the ball in hard and made good progress to our line, and going over on the 4th tackle.
The first set is always a dangerous time for a defending team, if we are not quite awake and up to speed you can guarantee that you will concede, so it’s something for us to work on in the future.
I was reffing the game, which is actually a pleasure at times as I get to see our team attacking the opposition line from their perspective. Yesterday, I was absolutely delighted with the way they attacked the line.
From a Powers perspective Fenton Postlethwaite, who won Millom’s Man of the Match was absolutely awesome yesterday. He is a really strong lad and I could hear the Millom coach saying “Here he comes!!” “Legs!!” I had a chuckle to myself as I knew that he had made an instant impact and was breaking tackles and going up to 20 metres with each drive.
If we can sort our movement out near the line we can look to have the forwards running onto the ball out back as another option and this will be a massive achievement.
On at least 4 occasions yesterday we moved the ball and took the line on really skilfully. I am getting more and more impressed with young Nathan Powell and he is now getting more and more confident with time.
Megan Harrsion was superb again yesterday, I have to say, she will not let anyone past and she had a spell in the Centre yesterday, and played superbly well.
All our forwards played a big part, Kaelyb, Ben and Marley again did really well, and Ryan Higgins went into Full back yesterday, and I continue to be impressed with his willingness to play a multitude of roles for the side, and this will only stand him in good stead for the future. He has now played 3 positions and done really well at them all!
The forward pass try was the best try I have seen, I was dying to give it because it was perfectly executed in every way bar that final ball……I am sure we will remember that and get the last little bit right for next time!
Callum Poss and Tom continue to grow working together, Tom racking up two great little tries when we struggled near the line and were on 5th, and Callum is starting to take heed and play with his head up. When that pass / go decision comes 100% I will be over the moon, but improvement again yesterday.
So, I think we “lost” the game by a try. All credit to Millom, they were tough and played well and took advantage when we made some substitutions and we had to rejig positions. At the end of the day everyone played a pert on the day and the result is the last thing to worry about. But all of their tries came from strong individual runs. 3 of ours came from great Rugby. Build on that and we have a bright horizon!!
Millom Man of the Match was Fenton Postlethwaite, who had a blinder, Thomas Salt Mom 2 who listened really well to Simon and made the right decisions at the right time and scored two good tries. And Kaelyb Woodend Mom 3 who worked really hard in defence and jammed the ball up really hard to pull them in and then we had the chance of space outwide.
Brad Lee Dutton played well too and a mention goes to Joeseph Thompson who was so close to scoring his 1st try.
