Cliff Hickey Cup Final
| Askam | 22 | vs | 8 | Barrow Island |
Silver Finish for Barrow Island Champions
BARROW Island lifted the first cup of the Barrow and District League season with a 22-8 defeat of Askam in the Cliff Hickey Cup final.
BARROW AND DISTRICT RL
The first half at Kelland Park, Dalton, was a hard-fought tussle, with Island going in front when Andy Webster crossed. Mike Pearce converted for 6-0.
Askam hit back, pounding the Island line and claiming their reward when Steve Postlethwaite found a gap to go over.
The Villagers kept up the pressure and just before half-time some crisp passing across the line saw Chris Vanstone cross in the corner to give them an 8-6 lead.
Island went back ahead in the second half as Gareth Shaw finished off a flowing attack for 10-8.
Askam were unlucky as they were denied by the touch judge for putting a foot in touch a yard from the line and being caught offside when Ben Lewney looked to have scored.
Island came strong in the last 10 minutes and young scrum half Luke Creswell – who had a fine game throughout – scored two great tries and added the goals to put the game beyond Askam.
Shaw took the man-of-the-match award.
Tonight, Millom and Ulverston go head to head in the Harry Warman Cup final at Fallowfield Park, Askam.
Both sides have had a good season, with Millom winning the league and Ulverston finishing second, and the game should be a cracker.
