Barry seal second straight promotion

A win at Caerleon and some favourable results elsewhere ensured that Barry were promoted back to Welsh League Division One on Saturday.

Goals from Dale Howarth, TJ Nagi, Ryan Evans and James Dixon ensured the Town were comfortable winners at Cold Bath Road; before news filtered through that second-placed Caldicot had been beaten by Dinas Powys and promotion-chasing Cwmbran Celtic had been held to a 1-1 draw against Undy Athletic.

The result is confirmation of Barry's return to the top tier of the southern Welsh League ladder; less than 700 days after the spiteful and hostile withdrawal that had threatened to drop Gavin Chesterfield's side into the footballing wilderness.

Chesterfield's achievement in restoring the club's status cannot be overstated; but huge credit must also go to the players who remained loyal to the cause in days of bleak uncertainty, before helping ensure a famous return two seasons in the making.

The club will now attempt to secure its second consecutive championship, with four points required from the final four outings to make certain of more silverware at Jenner Park.

A win on Saturday afternoon against visitors Penrhiwceiber Rangers would meanwhile seal the title should second-placed Caldicot Town fail to beat third-placed Aberbargoed Buds.
