A fantastic four goal flurry was enough for Barry Town United to see off Llantwit Major in a good-natured Vale of Glamorgan derby at Windmill Lane.

With a handful of players unavailable, manager Gavin Chesterfield was obliged to ring the changes, bringing in experienced Welsh League heads Nickie Jones and Michael Parkins to boost the midfield.

A full set of Barrians comprised the Town’s back four, as the talented Lee Baldock, back from a two-month injury lay-off, linked up with fellow Barry boys Lewis Cosslett, Paul Morgan and Ryan Evans.

However, it was a Llantwit lad who tilted the scales in Barry’s favour, and helped the team from Jenner Park to another important Welsh League win.

After the villagers had contained Gavin Chesterfield’s side for almost half an hour, Llantwit-based forward Michael Hartley put the Town ahead with a wonderful right-footed shot from thirty yards that soared majestically into the top corner.

Then, within moments, teammate TJ Nagi made it 2-0 with another spectacular effort; this time a dynamic overhead kick from the edge of the six-yard box (pictured).

Ryan Dorrian capitalised on a Major mistake to make it three; catching the goalkeeper off his line and rolling the ball into an empty net from some distance.

Then, in the final action of the half, Nagi was brought down to gift Barry a penalty kick; which Hartley comfortably converted for his second and Barry’s fourth.

Though Llantwit would manage a consolation early in the second half and have another chalked out for an offence against Town goalkeeper Dan Bradley, the visitors had enough in the tank to keep the hosts at bay and collect another valuable three points on the road.

In another positive, the latter stages saw midfielder Scott Jones return to action after some 18 months rehabilitating a long-term injury.

Jones joined the versatile Lewis Grant and promising youngster Bradley O’ Loughlin as Chesterfield’s second-half substitutes.

For the visiting Barry fans, strong in number and in voice, it was another rewarding Saturday. However, even the staunchest supporter will remain wary of the challenges ahead.

With fellow pacesetters Risca and Llanwern winning their respective matches, a most competitive season appears in the offing; with a host of other capable sides set to test the Town’s mettle in the league.

Meanwhile, attention is starting to turn to the Welsh Cup once more; with Undy Athletic set to come to Jenner Park for a second round clash on Saturday 9th November.

This match will be the first 2pm kick-off of the winter, with all Welsh League afternoon fixtures commencing at this time until the end of March.
