Ladies prepare for Cyncoed test

“We will have to perform at our best in all departments of the game to compete with them but it’s also a great opportunity for our players to express themselves.” Luke Williams (Manager)

The Barry Town Utd Ladies first team are currently preparing for their Round 2 FAW Cup tie this Sunday where they will travel to take on Welsh Premier League outfit, Cyncoed Ladies.

Barry have enjoyed an excellent and unbeaten start to the season in all competitions, however they will face their toughest test of the season by some distance when they take on the ‘mighty oaks’ in Llanrumney on Sunday.

Cyncoed, managed by Fern Burrage have established themselves as a strong Premier League team in recent years which last season saw them secure their first silverware at the top level winning the FAW Women’s League Cup with victory against Cardiff Met in extra time.

Barry on the other hand have been pushing on the door in recent seasons to try and achieve promotion to the top flight finishing in second and third over the last two seasons but they did manage to win both the South Wales FA & Welsh Women’s League Cups last season.

The ‘Dragons’ however underwent a restructure in the summer with a new coaching team and secured the signings of 10 new players and despite the overhaul, they have started the season in fine form with six league and two cups wins from their opening 8 games of the season.

The game will see Barry come up against a higher level opponent, boasting a number of international players at both senior and youth level and Williams is under no illusions of the task ahead of his team.

“This will be without doubt the most difficult test we will face all season. We go into the game in good form but we are also realistic that this will be a game where we go in as the underdogs which is rare for us.

“We have to enjoy the opportunity and challenge in front of us and try to showcase what we can do against a good premier league team. This will also be a good measure for us as to where we are on our journey in terms of developing a team that one day can compete at the top level. We will have to perform at our best in all departments of the game to compete with them but it’s also a great opportunity for our players to express themselves.”

The game will kick off at 2pm at Cardiff University 3G Pitch in Llanrumney (CF3 4JN).
