U16 FAW Cup Final Preview

6 months ago By Barry Town Utd Ladies FC

U16's looking forward to FAW Cup Final Challenge

“We’ve had a lot of tough away fixtures in West Wales throughout the campaign and the girls have come through these challenges and we just need one more big performance” Lee Jenkins (U16 Manager)

Barry Town U16 girls go into this weekend’s FAW Cup Final against Newport club, Villa Dino Christchurch looking to create history with the club’s first appearance in Wales’ biggest junior girl’s football competition.

In their short history as a club, Barry Town’s junior female section has achieved great success throughout the junior age groups including League, League Cup and South Wales FA Winners medals at both Under 14 and Under 16 age group last season. The FAW Cup is the one competition that has so far eluded the Vale of Glamorgan club and Sunday’s game promises to be a great encounter against two evenly matched teams that are leading the way at Under 16 level this season.

Both teams have a host of junior international players in their squads and the one league encounter earlier in the season ended in an entertaining 3-3 draw so the final promises to be a close encounter and a great occasion for both sets of players at the Cardiff International Stadium in Leckwith.

Barry’s route to the final has seen them come through the initial round robin group stages defeating Baglan, Rhos, Llandore and Briton Ferry before a 6-0 quarter-final win at West Wales side, Dafen Welfare moving them into the last 4.

On 11th March, Barry travelled to Newtown, Mid Wales to take on North Wales team, Corwen and the players put in a fine performance, recording a 2-0 win to secure a place in the final.

Team Manager, Lee Jenkins has been delighted with the girls performances over the season. “The squad has performed to a high standard throughout the FAW Cup this season and the young players that have moved up from the U15 Squad for this competition have added real quality to an already talented squad. We’ve had a lot of tough away fixtures in West Wales throughout the campaign and the girls have come through these challenges and we just need one more big performance.”

The match will be a great advert for junior girl’s football in Wales with both teams representing the South Wales Women’s & Girls League and a good crowd is expected.

We hope you can come along and support the girls!
