U16 FAW Cup Semi Final: Barry Town 2-0 Corwen FC

9 months ago By Barry Town Utd Ladies FC

Barry put in excellent performance to reach the U16 FAW Cup Final for the first time.

“I couldn't be more proud of every single player today, they all played their part in a good performance and on the balance of play, deserved to go through to the final. The younger players in the squad all stood up to the challenge today and we look forwa” Lee Jenkins (U16 Manager)

Barry Town United’s U16 girls made the long trip to Latham Park, Newtown for their FAW Cup Semi Final on Sunday to take on North Wales side, Corwen FC.

On offer was a place in the national final of the biggest junior cup competition in Wales for girls football and both teams were looking to make amends following a tough semi-final defeats last season.

The game started at a frantic pace with both teams taking time to settle but it was Barry who found their rhythm in the opening period and deservedly took the lead through a well taken goal from Sian Rees.

The Vale club started to take a real stranglehold of the game, With the defensive unit containing Corwen’s direct approach and the midfield looking confident in possession. Barry were threatening the Corwen goal on a regular basis with efforts hitting the post and crossbar before Rees grabbed her second of the game to put Barry into a commanding position.

To their credit, Corwen came out in the second half and refused to lie down and they started to build up some pressure on the Barry goal with keeper, Ruth Stanley making a smart save to her right to keep the scoreline at 2-0.

Barry weathered a good spell of possession by the North Wales side and finished the match on the front foot, creating several other good chances but there were no more goals added to what was an excellent team performance to record Barry’s first ever appearance in the FAW Cup Final.

Huge congratulations to all the players and coaches. Team Manager, Lee Jenkins commented, "I couldn't be more proud of every single player today, they all played their part in a good performance and on the balance of play, deserved to go through to the final. The younger players in the squad all stood up to the challenge today and we look forward to the final where we need one more big performance."

Barry will take on another South Wales club, Villa Dino in the final who defeated Newcastle Emlyn in extra time in their semi-final. The match date and venue is to be confirmed.
