Dafen Welfare 2-3 Barry Town Utd

Cannon late strike maintains Barry's winning streak.

Barry made the journey west for their fourth league match of the season away to newly promoted Dafen Welfare, looking to maintain their excellent start to the season with 3 wins from 3 in the Welsh Women's League.

Despite a disappointing start to life in the second tier for Dafen so far, they have put in several positive performances narrowly losing out by a single goal margin against promotion hopefuls Caldicot Town and Aberystwyth Town and therefore Barry knew this would be anything but a routine afternoon in Carmarthenshire.

With Chelsea Deacon away on international duty, Sian Rees came into the team to make her first start for the ladies first team following surgery over the summer in an otherwise unchanged team from Barry's last outing away at Aberystwyth.

The opening stages of the game saw Barry looking to maintain position, building up play in an attempt to break down a resolute Dafen defence with the home team breaking on the counter attack. It was Barry who took the lead with the first big chance of the game when some fine build up play saw the ball find Emma Cannon in the penalty area and she calmly placed the ball into the bottom corner.

It was the ideal start but the visitors were far from comfortable with the game becoming a scrappy affair. Dafen were getting some joy in behind the Barry defence and it was by no surprise when the host got a equaliser. However, it was an unfortunate moment for Barry defender Alex Allen who attempted to head away a dangerous cross only for the ball to loop into the corner at the back post.

Dafen were rejuvenated and ten minutes later the hosts took the lead when another long ball went over the Barry defence an the on rushing striker slotted the ball home to make it 2-1 to Dafen at the break.

The visitors made some tactical changes at half time to eradicate some of the weaknesses in the first half performance and they improved after the break. Cannon and Daisy Evan-Watkins went close with efforts and half way through the second period Barry got on level terms from the penalty spot following a handball. Captain, Charlotte Preen stepped up and smashed home the spot kick to register her third goal of the season.

Barry were now maintaining possession much better and went in search of a winner and it duly came on 82 minutes and what a goal it proved to be. Rees played an excellent through ball which Cannon raced onto before unleashing a superb strike from the edge of the penalty area that lopped over the goalkeeper and into the far corner making it 3-2 to Barry. Cannon registering her first goals in the Welsh Women's League this season.

Barry withstood some late pressure from the hosts to make it 4 wins from 4 in the league in what was by no means their best performance but another important three points that keeps them joint top of the league with a game in hand.

After the game manager, Luke Williams commented; "It is great to get another 3 points on the board, especially when we were by no means at our best today. Credit to our players for showing great character in the second half where we put in a better performance. There is plenty for us to work on but its been a fantastic start to the season and now we focus on the FAW Cup next week against Penybont."
