Our final trip of the season to Bedford to play an in form Brickhill Side.
In our last game with them we lost 2-1 to a last minute header in a very tight match. I knew todays game would be another tough contest.
We started poorly. Brickhill were winning all the early clashes and their big striker was causing us problems. We seemed to back off which put pressure on us and Brickhill won some early corners. After only 5 minutes a well struck corner was headed in 0-1 and a deserved early lead for opponents.
It was around the 10 minute mark when we seemed to wake up. The midfield were now getting their foot on the ball and using it much better. Callum Mc was looking lively and becoming an excellent outlet linking up suberbly with George Nics. He was using his pace well and pushing the team forward.
We were creating some chances but mostly around the box and unfortunutely today we were not quite catching them.
After around 20 minutes we got some nasty head injuries. First Kieran was caught by a boot/studs and we had to give him a rest then within a minute Kyle and Shane cracked heads. Both got themselves up and continued but may have lumps later!
The rest of the first half was fairly even and ended 0-1.
Instructions at half time was to continue as we had finished the half and certainly not how we started.
Unfortunutelty within 5 minutes of the second half we were 0-2 down. A Brickhill cross bounced accross our box catching the defence out and their striker smashed home a second.
As last week the boys showed good character not dropping their heads and keeping themselves in the game.
I felt in the second half kicking up the slope we probably played our better football. Especially in 2 passages of play switching play from the left to right.
One of these ended up getting the ball to Callum Fish who is in good goalscoring form at the moment. He struck an excellent shot which the keeper couldn't prevent from going in 1-2.
Naturally this gave the boys a lift and I felt we could pinch an equaliser. A free kick and a couple of corners went close with some last gasp efforts but we could not quite find space for the much needed goal.
The game ended 1-2 and was very similar to last weeks encounter with AFC. We are a significantly better team than we were last season and now getting really close to the top clubs.
However the last 2 games have highlighted the areas we need to develop for next season:
- Playing at the same high standard of football and competing for 60 minutes.
- The physical side which will need an addition to the squad.
- and getting more players forward to support our strikers when we have the ball.
We will continue to develop and show the same improvement next season as we have done this.
Supporters Player of the Day goes to Callum Mc. Superb running with the ball at their defence and equal energy to get back.
Managers Player of the Day was Jacob. Made time on the ball when their was so little space in the middle of the park. Very strong as ever in the challenge.
