2nd Home Win Give Swans Another Push
Barton took on Rainworth Miners Welfare at the Easy Buy Stadium and beat them 2-0 in the NCEL Premier Division.
A sunny afternoon saw as two teams battled each other for 3 points in the NCEL Premier Division. Suffering a disappointing 5-0 loss to Staveley Miners Welfare in their last fixture, the Swans are now into their last 5 games of the season. With a postponement in their scheduled fixture against Athersley Recreation in midweek, Barton were taking on Rainworth in their 1st fixture of the last 5. Rainworth's recent form has seen them win one, draw one and lose 3 in their last five fixtures. A bounce back was needed for the Wrens as they sustained a heavy 6-1 defeat to Bridlington Town in their last fixture, spurring them on to take 3 points from Barton. Barton's last two fixtures have resulted in heavy losses but their #GreatEscape bid continues as they still have a good chance to keep themselves in the NCEL Premier Division for next season. It was vitally important they looked to get points from this game.
An attendance of 102 watched on as the teams shook hands and took their positions on the field. The game was kicked off and an intense start to the game began. Both teams were very much up for the fight and possession was being passed over quite often. A chance here and there for both sides saw them come close, but it stayed 0-0, 20 minutes in. With the fixture being so vital to Barton they needed to step it up. Luckily for the home side, in the 26th minute, they had the chance to do this. A penalty conceded by the visitors saw Tom Waudby called to the spot as he looked to net his 12th goal of the season. He stepped up and put the ball in the back of the net to the delight of the home fans. With a lead now, the momentum swung in the direction of the home side. As the visitors banked on trying to get a goal back, they were dealt another blow, as 5 minutes later in the 31st, Eddie Rogerson also found the net for Barton. Gary Bradshaw's great hold up play contributed massively to putting them 2-0 up. The game began to even out, as the Swans became comfortable with their lead. The teams went in at 2-0 for the half time break.
The Second Half brought more action for the onlooking spectators. With two goals to make up for, the visitors were in an attacking frame of mind. More battling for possession ensued, and chances were once again created at both sides. Saves from the home side's keeper Rich Watson kept the scoreline down for the sides as the minutes passed. Looking like they would score, Rainworth were just struggling to find that finish to bring the scoreline down, and Barton in times were defending astutely. The game continued on staying at 2-0, and as the final whistle was blown, the crowd erupted into celebration. All 3 points were in Barton's hands, which was important as their relegation rivals Parkgate, won their fixture too.
We'd like to thank everyone for their support and we hope to see you at our next fixture!
