Hinckley Times Interview with Jimmy Ginnelly 7 Mar 2014 08:36 - by Isaac Ashe

“We were in all sorts of trouble in the first 15 minutes but we dug in. The trouble with us at the minute is that we blow hot and cold.”

A last-minute goal from Nigel Julien gave Barwell a priceless win at Stocksbridge Park Steels on Monday.

Julien held his nerve after a lengthy day when keeper Jack Ward was sent off for bringing down Luke Barlone.

Jimmy Ginnelly’s side were trailing after only two minutes to a Matthew Hamshaw goal but levelled 14 minutes before the break through Connor Gudger.

It gives the Canaries a six-point cushion between themselves and Witton Albion, who currently sit in fourth bottom of the EvoStik Northern Premier League Premier Division, the final relegation spot.

But the night could have gone very differently after Ginnelly and four of his players were caught in traffic and didn’t arrive at the game until 7.42pm - three minutes before kick-off.

“We were fortunate not to be four down,” said Ginnelly. “And I couldn’t have complained if we were.

“But Connor’s scored a great goal to get us back in it and then Nigel’s cool as anything at the end, and he doesn’t normally even take the penalties but Luke Barlone had missed the last two he’d taken.”

Ginnelly’s side now entertain Nantwich Town on Saturday then go to Rushall Olympic on Tuesday with a target of four wins from the last 11 games in their minds.

“That three points puts us in the pack again and I think 50-53 points will see us safe and I think we will stay up. But it’s a massive week for us. If we keep winning one and losing one that would probably be okay for us.

“We probably deserved to get beat on Saturday at Frickley on the whole 90 minutes but on Tuesday we dominated 40 minutes of the second half.

“We were in all sorts of trouble in the first 15 minutes but we dug in. The trouble with us at the minute is that we blow hot and cold.”

Ginnelly hopes new signing Tony Capaldi, the former Northern Ireland international, will be back fit in time for the visit of Nantwich apart from which he has a full strength squad to choose from, including the return of veteran midfielder Richard Lavery.

“Having Rich back has been a big bonus for us and having someone of Tony’s quality around is great.”

Meanwhile Ginnelly is considering a change of tack for next season as he looks to ‘keep up with the modern game’.

“It changes so much and if I’m going to be calling on young kids from places like Aston Villa, Coventry and Walsall I think I need to have more in my barrow.

“I probably need to go and do a couple of coaching badges if I have time, you never stop learning in this game and the game has evolved so much.

“I think we’ll survive but that’s not enough, I want us to improve, all teams I’ve been involved with have done that even going back to the Stockingford days when if we won the league we’d look to win it by more the following season.

"I think we'll finish 16 or 17th but I want a 100 per cent improvement next year that would see us near the top eight and I really want another crack at this league next season using what we've learned this one."
