Left-back shares thoughts after Barwell's run of three consecutive clean sheets

Three is most certainly the magic number at Kirkby Road.

A run of successive shutouts has played a key part in Barwell’s rise up the Northern Premier League table.

After hovering just above the bottom four for much of the first-half of the campaign, four straight wins have taken the Canaries to within a single point of the top ten.

Left-back Eddy Nisevic has been pleased with the progress being made in defence, particularly with the side yet to find a settled backline, due to a number of reasons.

The 25-year-old said: “We’ve used a lot of different players throughout the season because of injures and enforced changes, so it’s been hard to find consistency.

“Guy (Hadland) has been training us hard on our defensive shape and we’re defending us a unit now.

“There’s a lot more balance, not just at the back but running through the whole team, so it’s a result of each player pulling in the same direction”.

It’s been a great turnaround for Nisevic after a difficult start to November.

The full-back was dragged off at half-time in Barwell’s defeat at Matlock Town, which resulted in a place on the bench for the following match versus Blyth Spartans.

The upward curve of form in recent weeks has coincided with Nisevic’s return to the starting line-up, with the defender contributing at both ends.

As well as the three clean sheets, Nisevic helped add gloss to Saturday’s win over Skelmersdale United, crossing for Brady Hickey to head home a fourth.

“In terms of my own game, I’m feeling a lot fitter recently,” explained Nisevic, when asked about his current form and the five-match winning run.

“I’d also say I’m a confidence player and I’m feeling good about my performances at the moment.

“My natural game relies on my ability to get forward and it’s great having Alex (Tomkinson) back to link-up with. In attacking situations, we were tremendous last year".

Nisevic continued to discuss the importance of good partnerships throughout the team.

“You’ve got myself and Nigel (Julien) or Alex on the left, the lads on the right, the three pairings down the middle, who are all combining well with each other.

“You start picking up your partner’s habits, which makes it easier to read what they are going to do next”.

After an inconsistent start to the season, with Barwell fighting to keep themselves safely above the relegation zone, Nisevic points to a change in recruitment styles to the club’s change in fortunes.

He said: “The experience the gaffer has been able to introduce to the squad has really helped us.

“Things didn’t go so well with a lot of younger lads at the start of the season and we’ve recruited well since.

“Stanerz (Craig Stanley), Cleve (Cleveland Taylor) and Bally (Callum Ball) have all come in, as well as others, and done a good job".

The longer the run of victories carries on for, the greater the comparisons will be to last season’s remarkable twelve-match winning streak.

Nisevic can already see similarities between the two, and is hoping the run can be emulated this time around.

With a home match against Sutton Coldfield Town this weekend, the full-back is also keen for Barwell’s home form to improve after a shaky start.

“We were just going into games in full confidence we’d pick up three points.

“It was a bit strange because we just kept winning game after game, without any doubts things would be different.

“Like this time around, we kept clean sheets and were difficult to break down.

“We haven’t quite made Kirkby Road a fortress this year and it’s something we have to do, if we want to achieve what we’re capable of this year.

“We might not get the gates of other clubs in the division, but our opponents always know we’ll make it difficult for them".
