Report by Richard Forrester.

A Jamie Towers double in the first half helped Barwell ensure a vital 3 points in what was a hard fought battle against Frome Town.

Nigel Julien opened the scoring with a well placed shot after 15 minutes before Towers doubled Barwell’s advantage a minute later. His second came after only 30 minutes with a well worked team goal but a Frome goal right on the stroke of half time clawed them back into the match.

The game started with Frome perhaps slightly dominating the early exchanges but to no prevail.

Barwell soon settled and the first chance came after 5 minutes following some good work from Towers on the right allowing him to whip a ball across the face of goal; however nobody could get on the end of it.

Liam Castle was soon called into action as some good link up play between Frome’s Mike Perrot and Matt Smith resulted in Smith’s shot saved well to the keepers left.

The visitors nearly took the lead on 11 minutes when a ball in the box was dropped by Castle and fell to Perrot whose strike was denied brilliantly by the on-rushing keeper.

Towers was troubling Frome’s defence with some surging runs down the right side before he was booked for a succession of fouls.

It wasn’t long before the opening goal was scored for the home side. Barwell’s domination eventually paid off after 15 minutes when a delicate pass from Jai Stanley fed Julien inside the area and his fierce left footed shot rebounded off the post and into the net giving Darren Chitty no chance.

Barwell were playing with confidence and they didn’t have to wait long for their second. Only a minute later Luke Barlone broke clear of the defence before playing it square to Towers who kept his cool and slotted it past Chitty.

Towers was a constant threat and his squared ball to Julien on 19 minutes was drilled wide on the edge of the box.

Frome were looking to find a way back into the game, pumping balls forward however Barwell’s defence stood firm with the towering figure of Liam Daly winning the majority of the headers.

The visitors enjoyed a rare 5 minute spell but only had half chances to feed off when Ben Thompson fired over from 18 yards.

Just as Frome had found their feet after conceding two, Barwell increased their advantage on 30 minutes. A brilliantly team worked goal consisted of Julien playing the ball down the line to Barlone who used his pace to beat the fullback and played a delightful ball across the goal for Towers to stretch brilliantly to knock in his second and Barwell’s third.

From there it was going to be an uphill battle for the visitors to claim anything out of the game. They nearly responded well when Thompson played the ball to Matt Smith whose shot inched past the right post.

Frome huffed and puffed and after a mistake by Captain Scott Hadland they had the opportunity to cross the ball but a great recovering header from Hadland cleared the danger.

Thompson won a corner for Frome on 43 minutes which was flicked across goal by Smith only for Daly to head the ball clear.

The visitors finally pulled a goal back right on the stroke of half time. The ball broke across the box and was met by the right boot of Luke Ballinger on the half volley to smash it in the top right corner of the net.

Scott Lower was booked deep into first half injury time after his tackle on Alex Lapham was worthy of a yellow card.

Frome looked rejuvenated in the second half thanks to their goal at the end of the first half and started the brighter of the two sides. A half-chance fell for Lapham who put the ball harmlessly wide after 46 minutes.

6 minutes into the second half and Frome were awarded a penalty. Matt Smith took the ball into the box and was brought down by Daly. The referee had no hesitation to point to the spot however Frome Captain, Josh Brigham stepped up and saw his spot kick parried by Castle into the path of on-rushing Ricky Hulbert who scuffed his shot wide.

It was a big let off for Barwell who continued with their 2 goal advantage but Frome were building momentum and had another chance only for Perrot to blaze over.

Lee Davidson replaced Tom Evans for Frome as they looked to find a way back into the game; nevertheless some good link up play from Barlone and Kevin Charley resulted in the ball falling to Julien whose shot never threatened Chitty’s goal.

Frome had a great chance to pull one back after 61 minutes. Thompson found space down the right, played it across the box to Hulbert and striker Perrot again squandered the chance.

Barwell made their first substitution of the day with Scott Rickards replacing Stanley who put in a real shift in the midfield.

After 66 minutes, Towers was still troubling down the right and was taken out deliberately by substitute Davidson resulting in a yellow card.

Frome were pumping the ball forward and had a scramble in the area until it was finally cleared.

Barwell made their second change after 70 minutes as Anthony Griffiths, returning from suspension, replaced Charley.

Towers looked to settle the game and, with a quick burst of pace, beat two players and got himself in the box before seeing his shot blocked.
The Canaries were conceding possession too easily in the remaining 15 minutes of the game which enabled Frome to gather the ball and apply pressure on the home side.

Barwell made their final change with Tyron Amory replacing Barlone.
Some late pressure from the away side made the game a little nervy for Barwell and after Matt Smith headed over from 6 yards, the home side held on for a well deserved victory.

Liam Castle was excellent between the sticks today saving a penalty and some crucial stops to deny Frome from getting back into the game. Scott Hadland put in a man of the match performance, often pulling the strings in midfield and dictating the game.
