Barwell 2 Bashley 3
Bashley Leave it Late to Bash Barwell in 96th minute Smash and Grab.
After a poor performance form both sides, Barwell thought they had done enough to earn a point but in the 6th minute of time added on and with the very last move of the game, Bashley grabbed the latest of winners.
Barwell went ahead on the stroke of half time as Jamie Towers struck a well aimed free kick only to see his lead wiped away two minutes into the second half by the impressive Richard Gillespie. The visitors took the lead from a contentious penalty and Barwell had to wait until the 85th minute to draw level again through Towers.
With both teams apparently having settled for a draw, Bashley scored from a corner right at the very end.
After 4 minutes a free kick from Carlos Geteski was not cleared by Pete Saunders and James Stokoe drove into the side netting.
A move involving Jamie Towers and Luke Barlone saw a brave dive by Tommy Smith in the Bashley goal. However, as a result he was carrying an injury for the rest of the first half.
With 12 minutes played a ball from Luke Barlone found Nick Green on the edge of the area. He shaped for a shot but it flew off his foot and well over the bar.
After 19 minutes Barwell could have scored as first Liam Daly then Rikki Bains then Jamie Towers in the same move shot for goal. On each occasion the ball was defended away, the last time off the line.
Two minutes later, referee Mr. Avent showed his first yellow card to Guy Sanders as he brought down Richard Gillespie who was running just outside the box.
After 25 minutes, Gillespie was again in the action as he created a shooting chance for himself on the edge of the box and shot just over the bar.
A foul on Nick Green on 32 minutes just outside the area gave Liam Daly a chance to go for goal. He strode up and hit a vicious shot that went through the wall and stung the keeper’s hands as he caught the ball on the line.
Four minutes after this, Gillespie tried to flick a ball over Liam Castle but fortunately, Rikki Bains was covering and able to head the ball out of danger towards the corner.
After 39 minutes, Barwell could have taken the lead as a superbly weighted ball from Nick Green found Jamie Towers a few yards out where he headed only to see his effort fly past the left post when it seemed easier to put the ball on target.
Much to the relief of the home crowd, Barwell took the lead on the stroke of half time as Nigel Julien was fouled on the edge of the box. Jamie Towers took control of the situation and played an excellent free kick which sped into the net low to the keeper’s left, leaving him standing.
Following his injury, Bashley keeper Tommy Smith was replaced by Joe Prodomo at half time.
Bashley equalised not long after the resumption as Gillespie took a shot that hit the post, went across the goalline and ended up back with the Bashley forward. He shot again, hitting the post again and this time he followed up and finished with a goal.
After 49 minutes, Barwell again went close as Nick Green played a delightful ball into the box. It was headed back by Rikki Bains into the path of Jamie Towers who headed, again past the post.
Barwell again threatened after 56 minutes as Nigel Julien fed a ball across the six yard line for Luke Barlone. His header was well gathered by Prodomo for Bashley.
A minute later Bashley responded as Dave Allen found Gillespie who drove the ball goalwards. Liam Castle was able to gather at the second attempt.
After 60 minutes Nick Green had a promising move interrupted as he was pulled back by Matt Finlay. The tall defender was booked for his foul.
The free kick was taken by Nigel Julien who found Liam Daly. The header from the back post was brilliantly turned round his post by Prodomo.
After 64 minutes Scott Hadland received a ball from the left from Guy Sanders. As he was blocked off the ball ran free in the inside right channel inside the penalty area to Jamie Towers who shaped to shoot. However, referee Mr. Avent chose to blow for the foul and denied Towers the chance to shoot unmarked.
The game took a turn against the home side after 70 minutes as Mason Rowley went to ground in the penalty area to tackle Richard Gillespie. Gillespie went down and appeared to foul Rowley who seemed to take the ball. However, Mr. Avent saw things differently and awarded a penalty to Bashley which was duly despatched by Dave Allen. Rowley was also booked in the incident.
After 73 minutes Barwell were awarded a free kick close to the bye line which was taken quickly by Nigel Julien. Gary Middleton did not retire ten yards and was booked for his trouble.
After 77 minutes, Luke Barlone was replaced by new signing Matt West making his debut for the Canaries.
Barwell finally managed an equaliser on 85 minutes as a Nigel Julien corner was headed on by Liam Daly and glanced into the net by the head of Jamie Towers with his second of the game.
In the first extra minute Nick Green tried a clever turn but was taken out by James Stokoe who was shown a yellow card.
With 5 minutes of stoppage time already played, Bashley were awarded a corner. The ball was floated past the back post where Gary Middleton was waiting to poke the ball into the net.
So Barwell come away with nothing after a lacklustre performance. There were chances especially in the first half for the home side but they failed to make the most of them. The price to be paid was a defeat against a side that Barwell should look to beat.
