Saturday 20th August 2011 (ko 3pm)

Athium Midland Football Combination Reserves, Division 1.

Report by Rowland Jordan

The first fifteen minutes of this game was stalemate with neither team really showing their ability to overcome the other. The Canaries then started to take command but on the half hour the Badgers scored against the run of play. A twenty five yard punt upfield split the Barwell defence to the left of centre and Frannie Wynn hit a first time left foot shot across the face of goal, beating a diving Leon Oswald to open the scoring with Brocton's first shot on target.

Two minutes later and Chris Castle broke through but shot straight at keeper Richard Johnson. However, in the 39th minute later Barwell were level. A long kick from Oswald was headed on by Jonny Paton, straight, to Shaun Robinson who hit a brilliant chip over the advancing Johnson into the net.

A minute later and Paton broke clear one on one with Johnson but Paton fluffed his shot straight to the keeper. In the 44th minute a Robinson left foot chip from 18 yards beat Johnson only to rebound off the crossbar back into play.

HT 1-1

The second half turned out to produce some excellent football with both teams willing to play attacking football. In the first minute of the half Paton fired just wide.

Just after, Louis Gamble hacked down Wynn inside the area. Penalty to the home side. Up stepped Alex Dakin only for Oswald to dive to his right and save the spot kick. Unfortunately for Oswald the ball fell back at the feet of Dakin, who stabbed in the rebound and put the Badgers back in the lead on 51 minutes.

A minute later and Martyn Olorenshaw had a shot turned for a corner by Johnson. Another sixty seconds and Barwell were level. Harry Calver put a 35 yard inch perfect pass to the feet of Tom Lillicrapp whose left foot shot across the goal beat Johnson and nestled nicely in the back of the net.

Straight from the kick off and a shot through a crowded penalty area resulted in Gamble heading off the line. That was Brocton's last real attempt as their heads dropped as the Canaries dominated the final run in. The two surprises were (1) Barwell only scored once more and (2) they took another 17 minutes to score the winning goal.

A quick throw on the right saw Sam Lycett nod the ball out for a corner as Robinson came charging in. The deciding goal came in the 70th minute, Robinson flicked the ball on for Paton, who then placed a low drive into the net from a tight angle on the right.

In the last ten minutes Paton was through, one on one against Johnson only to see the keeper tip the ball out for a corner. Robinson then hit the crossbar with a right foot chip. Finally Paton had a shot saved by the Brocton keeper.
