With a semi final looming there could have been no better test for Barwell than Quorn Reserves who are historically a hard team to overcome.

The game started at a very high pace which was to be expected if we were to match Quorn. With barely 2 minutes on the clock James Tomlin gave away a free kick in a very dangerous position on Barwell’s left side. Stout defending thwarted Quorn on this occasion.

Danger signs for all to see. Barwell stepped up the tempo and shortly after a nice through ball from the centre of the park saw Nico Moore hit the ball over the bar.

After 8 minutes Matthew Shorrock found himself free of markers and took the opportunity to shoot. The ball rebounded off the keeper to fall at the feet of the onrushing Louis Gamble who tucked the ball away neatly from 2 yards.

James Heathcote made one of his “Drunken Monkey” type mazy runs down the Barwell left, crossed the ball in for the defender to clear as far as Keil Kane on the halfway line. Kane jinked past 3 players and passed to Shaun Robinson who let fly but the ball just passed the post.

Soon after, a short corner for Barwell finds Heathcote lurking on the edge of the area. He shoots but the Quorn keeper Luke Bennett pulls off a fine save.

On 35 minutes Quorn push forward into the area where Tomlin catches the striker giving away a penalty. The resulting spot kick from Denis Moran sends Leon Oswald the wrong way.

Virtually from the restart, Alex Ball, Robinson and Moore interlinked cleverly allowing Moore to score with a tremendous effort.

Half Time: 2 – 1

The second period started with Quorn upping the tempo and matching Barwell attack for attack.
10 minutes played in the second half and the injured Robinson is replaced by Conor Hastings.

Quorn played in an excellent cross for the striker to head just over the bar. Gamble crossed the ball straight to Moore’s feet but the resulting shot flew over.

Quorn again pushed forward with a shot from Chris Baker making Oswald work.

Shorrock leaves the field and makes way for Jake Thompson.

On 87 minutes a long ball from the back by Jordan Pickering bounces on the edge of Quorn’s area and the first to react is Moore who heads the ball over Bennett into the net.

Full Time: 3 – 1

Barwell thoroughly deserved the victory against a very worthy opponent. The tempo was high, pressure on the ball was good and the passing excellent. Bring on Chasetown!

A joint Man of the Match going to Keil Kane and Nico Moore who both worked tirelessly.
