Frickley Athletic 1 Barwell 0
Ten Man Canaries Fall Short as Frickley Fire Home.
A lack of firepower up front combined with a single incidence of slack defending conspired to see Barwell come away with nothing in a tough match in South Elmsall.
The visitors had to cope with severe hostility both on and off the pitch from the start and the attrition paid dividends for the hosts who saw a surprise goal midway through the first half and a red card for Ryan Boothe half way through the second.
Barwell had their share of the possession throughout but were unable to convert as the home defence coped well with the Canaries’ onslaught.
It was Barwell who pressed early on with Alex Tomkinson and Eddy Nisevic supplying crosses for Joe Ballinger and Ryan Boothe but attempts ended off target.
After 22 minutes a long throw from the corner flag by Louis Bruce gave centre back John Cyrus the chance to nip in at the near post and head neatly into the Barwell goal much to the surprise of the visitors.
As Frickley pushed forward and the dangerous Jacob Hazel penetrated the Barwell defence, only a superb covering tackle from Ballinger prevented a certain goal.
Soon after keeper Liam Castle was called on to dive at the feet of Ross Armstrong who had made his way to the edge of the box.
Barwell responded and were unlucky when a long ball from Castel found Nathan Edgington who was only stopped by a dive at his feet from home keeper Seb Malkowski.
Malkowski was again in action ten minutes from the break to deny a Tomkinson shot from the edge of the box.
The second half continued in the same vein with both sides vying for control. A shot from Hazel that should have been buried drew an excellent save from the legs of Castle and at the other end a drive from Edgington was well saved by Malkowski.
However on 56 minutes the tide of the game changed when Boothe went in for a sliding tackle on Frickley’s Tom Davie. The home side to a man ran to the incident in front of the dugout that quickly turned ugly. Referee Simon Mather had already made his mind up to dismiss Boothe so Barwell were reduced to ten men for the last half hour.
The visitors tried to push forwards and shots from Edgington and Brady Hickey did not trouble Malkowski and soon after Edgington had a superb chance to latch onto a long ball from Castle but instead of a goal was penalised for a foot up on the keeper and saw yellow.
Captain Richard Lavery was unlucky not to head a long free kick from Castle closer to the goal with fifteen minutes remaining and after a superb block from Nisevic to deny Hazel, it was a volley from Hickey that went wide that closed the proceeding for Barwell.
