Grantham Town 0 Barwell 1
Canaries Edge Gingerbreads in End of Season Clash
A Ben Love forty yard wonderstrike was the difference between the two sides which saw ten man Barwell holding on to a slender lead towards the end of this encounter.
The home side could have taken an early lead if Paul Grimes had controlled a well placed Jordan Hempenstall cross but he placed the ball over the bar.
Grimes was again in the action as he fed Lee Potts who looked odds on to score but a timely block from Jack Edwards saved Barwell’s blushes.
On the half hour Liam Castle was called into action to save a Jack McGovern effort from close range.
Barwell took the lead after 43 minutes as Ben Love received the ball fully forty yards from goal. He struck a looping shot which sailed over former Hinckley keeper Dan Haystead and dipped under the bar.
The Canaries could have gone further ahead in stoppage time at the end of the half as Love crossed for Guy Hadland who headed goalwards only to find Sam Purcicoe on the line to defend the ball away.
Barwell started the second half with determination and Kevin Charley played the ball into the path of Edwards whose shot was palmed round the post by Haystead.
With 20 minutes remaining an altercation on the edge of the Barwell box saw Jamie Hood receive his marching orders and Guy Hadland shown a yellow card in the aftermath. Barwell would then have to defend out the rest of the match with ten men.
In the last ten minutes Barwell had to dig deep and a golden opportunity fell to Paul Lister who turned and shot from close range only to find Liam Castle perfectly placed to pouch the attempt.
Grantham went on the offensive for the last few minutes but the Canaries dug deep and held on to secure the victory.
