Basford United Academy Under 19s went out of the national Youth Alliance League cup after losing by the odd goal in five to Mansfield Town today.

Being drawn away against the unbeaten Stags side proved to be a tough challenge.

The home side dominated possession early on and Basford defended resolutely and it was real back to the walls stuff. Mansfield were clearly frustrated and could not find a way to break down the stubborn defence.

Basford were dangerous on the break and Daws and Wakefield both had half chances. Mansfield did take the lead on 38 minutes courtesy of a deflected cross that fell invitingly for the Mansfield striker to convert from close range.

Basford started the second half with a change of formation and a real urgency about them. The high pressing game clearly had Mansfield rattled and it if were for not some heroic saves from the home keeper Basford would have been in the lead.

A save from Wakefield and then Daws somehow kept Basford at bay. Wakefield then burst through for what looked a stonewall penalty which was not given. ! 5 minutes later another burst from Wakefield resulted in a clumsy challenge, a penalty was awarded this time, Wakefield converting with aplomb.

Basford were now the dominant side and took the lead via that man Wakefield , rounding the keeper after some great pressing. Mansfield were rattled but rallied well and were level on 73 minutes after good play down the flanks.

With both sides pressing for the winner it was end to end stuff and both Daws and Shipton missed gilt edged chances to win it for Basford and somehow Sansom made two unbelievable saves to deny Mansfield.

In the 90th minute Mansfield scored the winner to progress to the next round. Very hard on the Basford lads who deserved a penalty shootout. Good luck in the next round to a very good Mansfield side.
