Manager Daz Saunders made sweeping changes for this game as he looks to whittle down the squad and so rested 10 players who were involved in Saturdays opening day victory at Holwell and one of the 4 from Sat sae big striker Aaron Hooton start at centre half.
Whether last nights performance will give him more headaches is uncertain as United gave a really good display against our higher ranked opposition who looked a class passing outfit. After the vistors had deservidly taken an early lead and holding large chunks of possession United got a foothold in the game late in the 1st period and should have equalised as Carl Westcarr was foiled in a one on one by a fine double save from the vistors keeper. United though drew level right on the stroke of half time through Courtney Hastings. With Grantham making a lot of changes during the second period and home side sticking with almost the same 11 then it was Basfords turn to gain the territorial advantage and look dangerous down the flanks via Cashel Walters and Tommy Kemp. Curtis MacDonald had a fine game on the evening and registered at least 3 top draw saves. United though shot themselves in the foot conceding a really poor goal on 75 minutes converted by Carl Demidh.Choosing to play the ball out from the back possession was squandered and the vistors ruthlessly converted. Shame this goal as defensively United looked very good all evening. Basford missed a great chance to grab a share of the spoils as Carl Westcarr skied his penalty and the concenus is it has just landed.despite the only loss of preseason a very good workout.
