Basford United got back on the winning trail by defeating AFC Wulfrunians 2-1 with goals from Aaron Webster and Stuart Hendrie.

After the disappointment of league and cup defeats boss Martin Carruthers shuffled his side for the visit of Wolverhampton based Wulfrunians. In came new signing Dan White from Belper Town, Tom Coxon made his first start and there was a recall for Marc Goodfellow.

The visitors started brightly and had the ball in the net after five minutes but the flag was up for offside.

Dan Fletcher then hit the post with a shot but but otherwise defences were on top in a fairly even first half.

Basford came out for the second half fired up and put some neat moves together without ever really troubling Jonathan Brown in the visiting goal.

The breakthrough came after 55 minutes, TJ Nightingale was brought down and captain Aaron Webster confidently converted the spot kick.

The recent inability to hold on to a lead soon resurfaced and eight minutes later Dan Parker levelled with a shot from the edge of the box after a corner had not been cleared. A fine strike, but the defence cannot be happy with the room he was given.

It seemed as if the game was destined for a draw but Stuart Hendrie had other ideas, cutting inside from the left to beat Brown at the near post with a shot nine minutes from time.

It was an excellent goal and was tough on Wulfrunians, a well organised side who had given a good account of themselves.

Ruben Wiggins-Thomas could have made it three, but after doing all the hard work and rounding the keeper he rolled his shot across goal, and then it was Martin Kearney's turn to shine as he pulled off a couple of excellent stops as Wulfrunians threw everything into a late flurry.

Three hard earned points, but it's good to start winning again, hopefully this will be the springboard to better things.

Team: Kearney, Thornton, Fletcher, Coxon, White, Webster, S Hendrie, Smith (Francis 62), Wiggins-Thomas, Nightingale, Goodfellow (Whitehurst 83). Subs not used: Craven, Darkin, Carruthers.
