Ruben Wiggins-Thomas and Stu Hendrie both scored hat tricks as Basford United beat Kirby Muxloe 7-0

It was the club's biggest ever win in the Midland League and the first time in many years that two players have scored hat tricks in the same game.

There was no indication of what was to come in a lively opening spell, with both sides showing their attacking intentions.

Saul Deeney had to make a couple of excellent saves from Aaron Love and Ryan Seal as the visitors pressed.

The game changed when Wiggins Thomas opened the scoring with goals in the 26th and 27th minutes - first he took a pass from Joe Coxon to score and then Lee Hendrie was the provider.

Another Deeney save saw him start off a move that ended with Stu Hendrie hiting the post, but Hendrie finished off an opening created by Blair Anderson three minutes from half time for 3-0.

Lee Hendrie made it 4-0 two minutes into the second half, then Wiggins-Thomas scored his third from the penalty spot after Fabian Smith had been brought down.

Stu Hendrie then completed his hat trick in the 74th and 83rd minutes as Basford turned in a great display of attacking football and clinical finishing.

It was a display that delighted manager Martin Carruthers who hailed the "tremendous performance", adding "All the players played well today and really worked for each other. It's a great achievement to record such a win against a good side like Kirby Muxloe and shows just what can be achieved if we all work together."
