United win late
Basford United win late in Tuesday nights Clifton fixture.
Basford united snatched a late late winner to claim 3 precious points against our old NSL rivals Clifton and so make it 2 wins out of 2 games and 2 clean sheets on the bounce. In a game that was incredibly close two very well balanced teams slugged this out over the 90 minutes with both having periods of control with neither being able to go in front with both defences and keepers in inspired form. On this showing both teams should harbour hopes of doing well in this seasons CML south.
In the defining 85th minute of an enthralling game after Curtis MacDonald had made a superb save to deny Michael Evans point blank from 6 yards, United swept up field and the electric Courtney Hastings produced a sublime flick over Joe Parlatt to snatch the points for Basford.
Earlier the big United keeper certainly earned his corn from the very 1st minute and kept Basford in the game with 4 superb saves, none better than the point blank 5th minute save from a free header from almost on the goal line. One cannot ignore the contribution of visiting keeper Joe Parlett also on the evening and he too made wonderful saves to keep out Ryan Johnsons 1st half effort and a great low second half strike from Kev Walker that the keeper saved low at the base of his post.
With both defences on top Gaz Willows making his Basford debut at centre half for Basford gave an assured performance and was always in the right place at the right time to clear danger alongside Ty Gray who likewise was excellent on the evening. United also gave a debut to Wayne Jones and Tian Walton. Jonesy gave a typical bustling display and linked well with Josh Niblett to give us an insight of his qualites. Tian Walton still not fully recovered from a toe injury like all strikers on the evening for both clubs was well shackled. Courtney Hastings proved a tremendous spark for us off the bench and his electric pace immediately put defenders on the back foot and opened up space for Kev Walker and flankers Tommy Kemp and Ryan Johnson and United clearly gained the lions share of possession in the 2nd period with Hastings bagging his 1st competative goal for United to claim 3 precious points.
