Basildon 38 Stevenage 13

Lucky 13 for Basildon----Eventually.
A 13th. successive win finally secured promotion to London one for Basildon in front of their largest crowd of the season. The home fans however were silenced when a strong quick Stevenage side took a deserved lead after five mins with a converted try. The visitors were exerting strong pressure on Basildon who had their work cut out to stop Stevenage adding to their tally but eventually conceded two penalties which were duly converted to extend Stevenages lead to 13-0.This seemed to rouse the home side with Basildon starting to win more ball and came very close to opening their account only to be held up on the line three times. With half time approaching Basildon maintained strong pressure but failedt score and went in 13-0 down at half time but had sensed some chinks in their opponents defending.

Having made two changes with Green and Meadows replacing Hickey and Jones Basildon started the second half as they ended the first putting Stevenage under continued pressure. With the forwards winning more and more ball it seemed only a matter of time befor Basildon opened their account. At last the breakthrough arrived, ironically in the 13th. min of the second with super sub James Meadows touching down with Daniel Kemp adding the conversion 7--13.With the crowd now urging them on,a seemingly tiring Stevanage side defending their narrow lead had a desperate clearance kick charged down which led to Nick Howard scoring under the posts and with Daniel Kemp adding the extra two points Basildon take the lead for the first time--14--13

With Basildons superior fitness now very evident and some excellent handling along the line ended with flanker Mark Chandler, after a masterful ball jugglig act cross the line for another Basildon try which again was converted by Kemp 21--13. With Basildon now in complete control Nick Howard scored with a rare drop goal 24--13. With five mins left to play and Basildon running rampant two more trys followed, firstly a darting run from scrum half Chippy White put him in under the posts and this was quickly folled by full back Daniel Rowell touching down wide out. Daniel Kemp rounded off a brilliant kicking display by converting both tries 38--13` Basildon:Rowell,B.White, Dieu-De-Bellefontaine, Howard, Jones, O'Mahony, J.White, Stevens, Baker, Harman, Creasey, Hickey, Chandler, Crowhurst, Kemp, Replacements: Meadows, Green, Chester, Keogh.
