This was a highly charged bruising contest between two evenly much sides competing to stay in the race for the championship. There was no way of predicting the outome as both teams thundered at each other in a passionate series of mauls and pick up and drives making it an exciting encounter. The host team fielded a heavier pack which suited the conditions. They settled first determined to overturn their early season defeat and tried to win the game in a flourish driving Beaufort into their heartland and keeping them there. But an early score eluded them as a superb Beaufort's defence held firm The first score came from Beaufort after 25 minutes when Number 8 Andrew Morgan muscled his way over near the corner. But within five minutes Rogerstone hit back. To lose possession in the tackle or fumble a pass was to court disaster against the home side and from a turnover they demonstrated it clinically to produce a well worked try . The conversion from a wide angle give them the lead.

The pace and intensity shown after the break never waived and the tackling from both camps was awesome . A contentious yellow card in the lineout reduced Beaufort to 14 players and Rogerstone saw an opportunity to make the superiority in numbers tell when Beaufort were again turned over and lost possession. They finished off their attack with precision to put themselves back into the lead with another corner try.

Beaufort had a sliver more pace in their threequarters than their hosts and they used it to good effect on the hour to score a dramatic second and match winning try It began when lock Mark Heasley pinced the ball at the line out . Full back Hodson locked on to a pass and sped upfield leaving the opposition defence in his wake before releasing wing Matthew Burrows on a 30 metre touchline run. He was brought down at the corner flag with a tackle the referee deemed illegal He had no hestitation in awarding a penalty try and with conversion Beaufort were back into the lead 15 points to 12

Beaufort now scented victory and in the last quarter kept Rogerstone pinned down in their twenty two with a series of powerful drives . But Rogerstone held their ground and when a Beaufort mid field error lost them possession. Rogerstone hacked the ball out of defence and narrowly failed to ground the ball over Beaufort's line. It was now the turn of Beaufort's defence to be scrutinised in a thrilling last five minutes It took an herculean effort from the visitors to keep Rogerstone out There was outstanding defensive work from flanker Justin Bennett and his lock Matthew Hopkins both of whom were literally out on their feet at the final whistle and deserved being dubbed Beaufort's star performers.

Beaufort' still lie in fourth place in the league but have more games in hand to play, all away fixtures, commencing next week against league favourites Caerleaon.
