Beccehamians 17 - Vigo 12
Beccs won a hard fought game at Sparrows Den on Saturday.
Considering the amount of rain we had last week the pitch was in good condition.
Early exchanges were even and then Beccs managed to establish themselves in the Vigo 22.
Eventually Beccs were awarded a penalty in front of the posts and decided to take a tap penalty about 5 metres out.
This proved to be a bad mistake as after a few passes Vigo No 10 Tony Whitehead intercepted a pass and set off down the pitch. He was eventually tackled well into the Beccs half but managed to get the ball to Elliott Stickings who scored the try. The conversion was missed to leave the score 0-5.
While chasing the break Pat Reffell pulled a hamstring and was replaced by Freddie Buckle.
Beccs got straight back into the game and after the award of a penalty Alex kicked to the corner.
From the resultant lineout Beccs drove the ball over the Vigo try line and Sol Usher touched down for a try. Alex kicked the conversion from wide out to make the score 7-5.
Beccs continued to attack and eventually centre Jordan Souter sold a dummy and created a gap. He passed to Freddie Buckle to sprint over for the try. Alex failed to convert the try.
At half time the score was 12-5.
Beccs were on top at the start of the second half and kicked another penalty into the corner. Vigo pulled down the drive from the lineout giving Beccs another penalty and a Vigo second row was sin binned. Beccs messed up the lineout throw and Vigo managed to clear their lines.
The loss of the player seemed to galvanise Vigo and they were on top all the time he was off the field.
When he rejoined the fray Vigo kicked a penalty to the corner and when they drove to the try line Beccs held them up. From the scrum the ball was passed to Tony Whitehead and although tackled he twisted to score an excellent try. Tony Whitehead kicked the conversion to bring the scores level at 12-12.
There were 16 minutes left and all to play for. Beccs rang the changes and brought back Mary and George.
The Beccs forwards drove into the Vigo 22 and from the ruck the ball was passed out right to Sam Edwards who scored a fine try out wide. Alex failed to convert the try leaving it 17-12.
There was still time for more drama and Vigo were on top for the rest of the game. Speedie disagreed with one of Mr Wilson’s decisions and Beccs were marched back 10 metres for the penalty.
The play switched to the other side of the pitch and after another questioning of Mr Wilson’s decision by someone Speedie was shown a yellow card and the penalty was advanced 10 metres.
Vigo decided to opt for the scrum because Beccs were short a forward and the scrum had creaked for most of the second half.
However Beccs seven managed to put a nudge on which caused the Vigo No 7 to knock on at the base. Beccs still had to win their own scrum and kick the ball to touch to secure victory.
