5 Hills Cycling Challenge and Family Fun Ride - Sunday 7th July

By Paul Skelly, 2nd Jun 2013

Beckenham Rugby Cyclists, in association with o2e and Beckenham Rugby Club are pleased to announce our fabulous charity fundraising event for this year - the 5 Hills Challenge 2013 - a day of cycling, family fun, free BBQ and live music on Sunday 7th July.

Following on from the huge success of last years 5 Hills Challenge and Family Charity Cycle Ride Beckenham Rugby Cyclists are proud to announce their second annual sportive. Last year we had 90 rides complete the hills challenges and 52 complete the family ride. These were amazing numbers considering the weather we had leading up to the event. This year, however is going to be BIGGER and steeper!!

The event has its origins in the members of the embryonic cycling club – Beckenham Rugby Cyclists – who, after supporting o2e for a number of years, saw BRC formally link-up with o2e and as part of that association organise their own Charity event in 2012 - the Five Hills Challenge - A charity cycling Sportive taking in some of the most challenging climbs in the local area.
The Five Hills Challenge was a great success with over almost 150 participants and raised approximately £6,500 for o2e and strengthened our links with the Charity. We went on to play a major role in two of o2e's big fundraising events - The Amsterdam 200 and the Gala Ball. As a result of our efforts o2e allocated £40,000 for our nominated Charity for 2012 - Riverside School.
We will be looking to build on the success of the inaugural event and make the 2013 Challenge, bigger and steeper with more participants and raising even more money for Charity!
The event this year has been organised to raise much needed money for o2e and our chosen local charity, Demelza House

There will be a small change to this years challenge in the sense that all cyclists will get the opportunity to cycle '5 hills' during their challenge. There will be three courses; the standard 5 hills route, the elite 5 hills route and the family cycle.

Following the cycle all participants will receive free entry to the evening entertainment. This includes a free BBQ meal, activities for the children and live music. Entry to the evening entertainment for non-participants will be by donation.

All proceeds raised at the event will go directly go to our charity and none of the costs of the event are taken from the funds raised by the participants.
A little background information about the charity we support and the cycle club:

Ordinary 2 Extraordinary (o2e) is a totally voluntary children’s charity whose mission is 'to make a difference to the lives of serious and terminally ill children.' Over the years O2e has supported many
great charities and really has made a difference to so many children’s lives raising over £1.35 million to date. For more information visit their website

Demelza House:
Demelza's Children's hospice supports children and young people (0-19) who are not expected to reach adulthood, and offer support to their families. The hospice offers children, young people and families the chance to build memories as a family unit, undertake a range of activities that are age and needs specific that they may not ordinarily be able to access.

Demelza offers complex symptom control during periods of active treatment. In many cases there is no cure. In others, treatment has been tried but failed and the focus has transferred from active to palliative care. When a diagnosis is given, families often feel very isolated. Short breaks and a range of specialist services benefiting the children and young people and their wider family are provided by this service, which are simply not available elsewhere. A very unique and special service that helps families though a very upsetting and challenging time in their life's.

Beckenham Rugby Cyclists:
A growing cycle club that was started three and a half years ago when a group of friends starting meeting for a weekly spin. This group of friends has grown and grown over the last few years and now has organised rides going out every day. What makes our club different from any other club is that we have rides to suit every level of rider, from those just finding a new passion for cycling up to those training for sportives, time trials and triathlons. A club for all.
