Fixture news for the weeekend

A large crowd is expected at Mount Pleasant this Saturday as we welcome Mid District rivals and old friends Merthyr RFC in a Swalec Championship fixture.

Merthyr have been headline news over the summer and have started the season by doing the talking on the field with an emphatic 45-5 win over Bridgend Athletic at their Wern ground last Saturday.

British Lion Andy Powell now leads the Ironmen and he was among the try scorers last weekend. Matthew Jarvis crossed for a brace, Osian Davies, Dean Gunter and ex-Osprey David Bishop also dived over the whitewash. Gunter added the extras with his reliable boot.

Involved in the Merthyr outfit this Saturday are ex-Pontypridd players James Howe and Craig Locke as well as former Bedwas 2nd row Phil Rees. There will be a warm welcome also for former player Gareth Way and coach Lee Jarvis who coached Beddau before moving up to the heads of the valleys.

Beddau though will be in buoyant mood after what was described as a shock result at Bargoed last weekend. The Green and Golds recorded a 21-14 win over last years runaway champions thanks to a hatrick of tries from Bradley Coombes and three conversions from Hywel Chatham.

A warm welcome is extended to the match official for tomorrow Mr Owain Griffith of Cardiff.

Kick off is 2.30pm.

Admission £5 (please note that the only entrance to the ground is at the top end / surgery end)

This match is also a designated Green & Gold card day with Dai Bartlett our guest singer.

The Development XV will be hoping for a 80 minute performance this weekend when they travel to Senghenydd in a Rhondda & East Glamorgan DRU League tie after a slow start in their defeat at the hands of Bargoed last Saturday.

The Green and Golds put up a battling display particularly in the 2nd half but will travel to Saints confident of putting things together and giving their hosts a real game.

Senghenydd also lost their first league game of the season 22-5 at Dowlais.

Kick off 2.30pm.

The Youth XV will be without coaches Christian Bundy (holidays) and Lewis Jones (Cardiff Blues duty) this Saturday so Club stalwart Jason Powell takes them to Bridgend Athletic for a Welsh Youth Cup tie (2.30pm).

The Youth XV have been unbeaten during pre-season and started the domestic season last week with a win over Ynysybwl in the 1st round of the Taff Rhondda DRU Cup.

The Athletic have always produced excellent youth teams and players so the young Green and Golds are more than aware of the challenge they face this Saturday.
