Beddau bonus against never say die Tredegar

Beddau 37 Tredegar 7 Swalec Division One East Match report by Lynn West

The score makes it look as though there was a huge gulf in class; there wasn't. The victory was though, fully merited and if sometimes things didn't work too smoothly there was a pleasing desire to keep trying until they did.

Tredegar apparantly had some difficulties in travelling and the kick off was a little delayed but they wasted no time in putting Beddau under some early pressure. When Beddau managed tp clear the danger Cameron Pimlow sliced through the defence with a break that really deserved a try. In the event Beddau settled for a Steve Robinson penalty to open their account.

Pimlow was again to the fore when finding Garan Pearce with a superb pass. The winger cleared his marker and straightened the remaining defender before handling on to Rhys Watkins. A despairing tackle came in and the moment had passed. Shortly afterwards, though the home forwards controlled a drive from the lineout catch and Rhys Watkins grabbed a try.

Steve Robinson landed a penalty when Tredegar were holding on but the Gwent side then profited from a lineout steal by bringing a succession of players, not the least both props, into a fluid handling move which ended with full back Greg Jones scoring and converting a good try.

Cameron Pimlow was never far from the action and when a ball was knocked on near the Tredegar 22 the outside half reacted quickest and won the race to his own kick for a neat try that Steve Robinson converted.

Beddau opened the second period with a splendid score. Dai Francis looped to take Pimlow's return pass and put Steve Robinson in space between the centres. Both Robin Lock and the hard working Polo Uhi played their parts in the move before Garan Pearce finished strongly in the corner. Steve Robinson converted from the right touchline.

Teenage New Zealander Abraham Papii had impressed on a number of outings for the DevelopmentXV and had been rewarded with a start here. He had shown a lot of early promise already and then with his last involvement before being being replaced was on the end of a simple run in after an impressive piece of continuity through the pack with Jon Elley and the always excellent Robert Jones to the fore.

The intensity never left the game and Beddau had to struggle to hold their shape after Rhys Watkins was sin binned. From a maul at half way Beddau turned possession and outside half Pimlow spotted a gap and went clear for his second try of the evening. Steve Robinson added the extras and Beddau were able to close matters out with some confidence.

The return of long time absentee Glen Slater was heartening and a typically powerful performance from replacement back row man Scott Britton emphasises some selection headaches ahead. Polo Uhi continues to work hard and is making more contributions while co centre Robin Lock is another whose significance to the side is visibly increasing.
