Ball made 13 appearances in the last campaign before his season came to a premature end with injury away to Spalding in what turned out to be one of the club’s best performances, a 31-13 away win. He takes over as First XV skipper from Sam Richbell who remains with the club and who will continue to contribute his experience in what looks to be a rejuvenated and improved forward pack. James Ross who also has previous experience at the Blues joins the club in the front row from National League side Shelford and Liam Lancaster who played for a number of years in Luton’s second row before a brief stint at Olney will add to the bulk of the front five. Following a year away at Shelford back row forward Ben Beagent rejoins the club and there is another returnee in the backs as Simon Lincoln returns to his old stomping ground to strengthen the back division following spells at Bedford, Cambridge and Old Albanians. Head coach Rowland Winter explained “Adding this experience to the exciting young talent we already have at the club is an important step in our overall development. James and Sam have played a big role in helping improve the knowledge and ability of many of our former Colts and we expect these new additions to do the same”.
Pre-season plans are also in place with the club hosting Buckingham in a warm up game at Putnoe Woods on Saturday August 20th. This will be followed by the first home league game of the new season against Coalville on Saturday September 3rd. With the Blues away on the same day the club have announced that this will be the first vice-president’s lunch of the season – details available from Barry Eynon on 07830 817164.
Training continues on Tuesday and Thursday nights at Bedford Athletic’s ground at Putnoe Woods at 7pm. Players of all ages and ability are welcome.
