Bedford was off to a quick start with a try within two minutes of play with quick passes from Seb Stenton Hibbert to Tom Gardner across to Alex Goffin over to Stanley Marginson
and Ben O’Connor with a drive to the line from Jamie Fullen
(converted Marginson). However, Welwyn returned the play with four tries (all converted) coming thick and fast within minutes of the restarts. Bedford tried to halt the scoring, but their attempts to move the ball were shut down effectively by Welwyn who scored again near the corner (not converted). At the restart, Jacob Finney
secured the ball and made progress towards the goal line, moving the ball across the pitch where Bedford gained a penalty from a high tackle. Will Reynolds
took the opportunity to move with precision to cross the line (converted Lee Tribe
Bedford now had their focus, the restart was caught be Tom Blakemore and moved across the pitch to be incepted by Welwyn but they were forced out to touch. At the lineout, Hibbert took the ball up the pitch, avoiding being pushed into touch and Alex Goffin took the ball from the ruck and into Jamie Fullen
’s hands and over to Will Reynolds
who scored close to the posts (converted Marginson). Bedford was in control of the next play and continued to push Welwyn with a good kick from Tom Evans
which Welwyn chased down and took out of play to end the first half.
Half time score: Welwyn U15 33-21 Bedford U15B
Whatever Welwyn’s coaches had to say in the interval clearly worked as Welwyn came back on fire and scored twice in first 5 minutes of play (one conversion).
Bedford began determined effort at recovery with Hibbert chasing down Welwyn and successfully pushed to play out to touch; Bedford won the resulting lineout and moved the ball from Marginson to Tribe to Gardner; a maul formed around Gardner and the ball was turned over. Welwyn were caught by Hibbert and Fullen scooped up the ball but was immediately overpowered by Welwyn.
The resulting scrum was won by Welwyn who scored (not converted). Welwyn’s next try was another run down the wing to score (not converted). Bedford was determined to keep playing and efforts from Tribe, Marginson, Gardner and Jacob Finney moved to be within Welwyn’s 5m line. Welwyn recovered the ball and kicked it clear. This was collected by Bedford and Finney, Goffin and Fullen tried again to get back to a position to score with an under pressure Welwyn forced to kick for clearance. Finney was ready and evaded several tackles, offloaded to Marginson but the next pass resulted in a knock on. At this scrum, Bedford turned over the ball and passes between Finney, Gardner, Goffin and back to Gardner meant Gardner crossed the line to score. (converted Tribe). At the restart, Connor Rogers
caught the ball, moved the ball out but Bedford was pushed out to touch. At the lineout, Bedford was back to defensive play with tackles being made but the ball was lost to Welwyn at the next scrum and they moved down the ball to the centre to score at the posts (converted).
At the restart, Bedford successfully chased the ball and Will Reynolds
and Hibbert tried to make more progress; an offload to Fullen saw him make 20m but with limited support the ball was turned over and Welwyn once again capitalised on the fragmentation of the Bedford team and scored (converted). Whilst Bedford continued to defend with great tackles going in and take opportunities they created including a grubber kick scooped up by Michael Richardson
, Welwyn kicked for ground when they turned over the ball. At the lineout, the ball made its way to Stanley Marginson
however Welwyn’s strong tackles resulted in them attempting a kick and chase but the ball went over the dead ball line and the game was over.
Final result Welwyn U15 69-28 Bedford U15B.
