Bedford Queens showed grit and determination in this feisty home encounter to earn a deserved 11-7 victory over Stewart & Lloyds Saturday 10th March.

Solid defence and some big hits contributed to this low scoring tie. Queens started stronger, taking the game to the visitors who infringed, giving Morrish the opportunity to convert his first penalty.

A hotly contested first half saw both sides fail to cross the white line although S & L missed 3 penalties, 1 of which was in front of the sticks. Both sides had opportunities but tight organised defence proved to be the victor on each occasion.

Frustrations began to show as S&L pressure returned unrewarded and David Morrish slotted his second penalty of the afternoon.

Queens showed good composure as a rare second half visit into the oppositions 22 saw Tim ‘Pringle’ Chapman force his way over after some solid forward work and quick blind side hands from the backs.

A heated game ensued resulting in a Yellow Card for Scrum Half Mick Norman. Without Norman to marshal his forwards Queens found themselves on the back foot for much of the remaining period but some resolute defending kept S&L until late on when they crossed and converted.

The visitors would have undoubtedly taken the lead and the victory if it weren’t for the acrobatic tackling of centre Del Starling who managed to stop their marauding No.8, who had been so penetrative all afternoon, by wrapping up the ball as he crossed the line.
