It is with a very heavy heart that Bedford Swifts announce the death of player, and club member, Ben Opperman on Monday 29th January 2018.
On 5th December 2015, Ben left home to play rugby with his beloved Swifts rugby club but suffered a severe life changing neck injury within the first few minutes of the match which meant that he was never able to return home and had very little movemenmt below the neck.
Ben fought hard every single day and showed true courage in trying to make as much recovery as he was able to, rarely letting the situation get him down and often being the one laughing and joking the most with his visitors. This courage and determination meant that, although he would never fully recover, Ben was doing the best that he could.
On Sunday 28th January 2018 Ben contracted an infection that rapidly spread through his body resulting in organ failure and Ben sadly passed away the following morning with his wife Nicola by his side.
Our prayers and love go out to Nicola and Ben's daughters in the hope that they can find the same strength at this very difficult time that Ben had found since his accident.
