Burton 38 v Bedworth 13

Midlands 1 West

Burton 38 v Bedworth 13

Bedworth traveled to Peel Croft to face a strong Burton outfit who have proved to be a very tough side to face this season on their home patch.

Burton kicked off and Bedworth had the early possession with the visitors looking to keep the ball tight and play themselves into the game through their pack. The Bedworth pack took the initiative a drove into the Burton half. Centre Mitchell Smith found a hole close to the ruck area and raced clear but the Burton cover defence was good.

Burton then began to impose themselves on the game and for a few basic handling errors could have opened the scoring. Bedworth again surged into the Burton half and looked dangerous on the attack. Bedworth looked to move the ball wide and as the Burton centre made the tackle he clearly knocked the ball forward. The referee claimed he had not seen the offence and the Burton centre gathered the loose ball and raced a fully 60 metres to dot down under the posts for a converted score 7-0.

Bedworth regrouped and again began to build some great phases of play with their forwards creating the openings. Repeated infringements from the Burton defence resulted in their centre spending time in the sin-bin for a deliberate knock on. Alan Foster slotted the simplest of penalties. Foster then followed this up with another shortly after to bring Bedworth to within a point at 7-6.

Burton realised they had to play a wider game as the Bedworth forwards were dominating so they utlised there strong backline to great effect when their fullback found space out wide to score. An excellent touchline conversion extended the Burton advantage to 14-6.

Burton battered away at the Bedworth defence for the remainder of the half but the green and white wall stood firm and Bedworth were still in the game at the break.

Half Time

Burton 14 v Bedworth 6

The second half began much like the first with Bedworth gaining early possession and with great line breaks from Ryan Jenkins and Steve Harwood Bedworth felt the next score would not be far away. However a lack of concerntration in the Burton 22 metre area allowed for a turnover and Burton mauled the ball clear. Burton sent a long kick down field and began to set up camp in the Bedworth half.

Burton identified a gap on the blindside and quick hands and some excellent offloads saw one of their forwards run clear to the line to score. The score was converted 21-6. Bedworth again had to ring the changes through injury and confusion in the backline saw the Burton outside centre race clear. He showed excellent pace to outstrip the Bedworth defence and score from 80 metres out 26-6.

Bedworth never gave in and worked a try of their own when they ball was moved wide Steven Bates looked to be clear to the line but he was stopped short. Burton killed the ball and from the resulting quick tap penalty Craig Malcolm smashed his way between three Burton defenders to score. Alan Foster landed the extras 26-13.

Bedworth sensed a way back but the Burton backline had other ideas and when their winger raced clear and fed inside to the supporting replacement forward to score the game was over at 31-13. Burton ran in another just before the final whistle sounded as their forwards piled over the line from a catch and drive at a lineout. The try was converted 38-13.
