2016/17 season starts in defeat

Bedworth travelled to Ickneild Street for their first encounter in Midlands 3 South to face a Woodrush team looking to impose and impress the home support who came out despite the wet conditions.

The opening 10 minutes was stream after stream of pressure from the travelling team with strong carries coming from Ieuan Lewis, Matty Randall & Tony Anderson punching holes into the defensive line. The wet conditions underfoot and in hand caused numerous handling errors resulting in a lack of end product within attacking positions.

These 10 minutes were the only positives to take out of a first half; handling errors, penalties, missed tackles & lack of phases being strung together meant ball being turned over to the opposition who cleverly played at their tempo. With strong runners coming round the corner and a clever kicking game Woodrush managed to pin the the away side back in their half much to their dismay.

Despite showing early dominance Bedworth couldn't get back into their stride and started to struggle at the breakdown with too many players committing to lost rucks or to little committing to retain possession. With lack of possession and territory the Birmingham based side took advantage and scored three answered tries to go in at half time 22-0.

The second half didn't start overly well for the travelling Bedworth team either; despite the half time agreement of securing ball, stopping cheap penalties & over committing the opposite happened. Woodrush took advantage of this and took an easy and cheap 3 points in front of the posts to make the score 25-0.

From the restart there was an improved chase, tackle and ruck clear out which showed the home side they were still in for a game, once again the conditions seemingly got the better of the Warwickshire based side as they coughed ball up in a promising position allowing Rush to clear their lines.

With a bonus point on offer the hosts went looking for a 4th try and spent time probing the resolute defence and gained nothing from each attempt as some sound tackling pushed the attack back time after time.

The travelling supporters did have something to cheer and savour from a wet afternoon; 3 phases were put together for the first time since the opening 10 minutes and the ball found its way into Sam Taylor's hand where he straightened the line palmed off one player and then put his foot down to out sprint the onrushing fullback and covering defender to touch down in the corner - Iliff kicking the extras to make it 25-7.

The remaining 15 minutes of the game remained scoreless yet entertaining with both teams looking to score and run the ball, Bedworth having the majority of the ball and imposing themselves on the game a little to late and failing to close the gap any further.

The game finishing with a home win, leaving the travelling side with development points for next week's trip to Droitwich.

Captain Lee Bennett said after the game "We stood off them and allowed them to play their game, if we had played at our tempo such as the first 10 and last 10 then the game could have been completely different".

Coach Brendan Evans took a small positive from the game "Whilst we we're outmuscled in the first half and conceded, the second half was ours and we need to take this and build upon it".
