The death has been reported of footballing legend Eddie Brown, who became player-manager of the Greenbacks in the early 1960s.

Eddie joined the then Bedworth Town club after a notable Football League career with Preston North End, Birmingham City, Coventry City and Leyton Orient.

He always held fond memories of playing for the Greenbacks, and in recent years sent several good luck messages to the club via former director Graham Davison.

Eddie scored 90 goals in 185 games for Birmingham City and he played in the 1956 FA Cup final against Manchester City before moving into non-league football.

An intelligent and articulate man, he went into teaching after leaving football- and at the age of 52 he gained a degree in French, from Newcastle Polytechnic, and taught the language until his retirement.

Previously he had taught physical education at the local Catholic college and assisted Preston Grasshoppers Rugby League team with their fitness programme.

He died aged 85 at his home in Preston, and funeral arrangements are to be announced later.
