BEDWORTH UNITED 3 BIGGLESWADE TOWN 1

by Alan Robinson

The Greenbacks prepared for the biggest Southern League game in their history with another condidence-boosting win.

They brushed aside Biggleswade Town, promotion rivals for much of the season, clearly with their minds focussed on the play-off final against Uxbridge.

The Greenbacks hardly needed to click into top gear but they were again deservedly applauded off by another 200-plus Oval crowd.

Those numbers could be trebled when they return tomorrow night hoping to watch Steve Farmer’s team move within 90 minutes of promotion.

Strikers Mitchell Piggon and Ashley Robinson both scored in the first half-hour to cushion them towards victory over Biggleswade.

PIGGON was denied twice by goalkeeeper Anthony Ender before the Greenbacks top goalscorer shot past him in the 10th minute after racing clear.

ROBINSON added the second in the 29th minute when he darted in to score after Ender pushed away a flick-on from Ashley Spencer.

Manager Farmer then enjoyed the luxury of being able to replace his two goalscorers with another quality strike pairing.

Mark Bellingham and Luke Corbett, for so long the two-man Leamington goal-machine, were brought on for the last 25 minutes.

Both strikers could have notched hat-tricks although they had hardly touched the ball when Biggleswade pulled a goal back in the 69th minute.

A high cross into the Bedworth box saw back-pedalling centre-half Kyle Cartwright attempt an headed clearance as Tom Cross came to collect.

Unluckily, the ball dropped on to the bar, and Biggleswade central defender STEVE GENTLE joining in the attack, responded first to head in from almost on the line.

Cartwright, stepping in for the rested Ian Roper, made an outstanding return in his first full game since January.

For a brief spell, the goal served to spark heart into Biggleswade but the Greenbacks finished with such a flourish they might have trebled their tally.

Bellingham fired wide from a good position and he then twice broke clear only to be denied by the advancing Ender.

CORBETT also went close before he finally netted in the 82nd minute from a Tom Bates cross, and the former Leamington man almost added a fourth with a shot that rattled the bar.
