RUGBY TOWN 1 BEDWORTH UNITED 0
The Greenbacks face a testing final three games after suffering a disappointing away defeat in their Easter Monday local derby against Rugby Town.
They remain third but they are now one of five clubs bidding for three of four play-off places - with games coming up against second-placed Slough and Biggleswade, who are sixth.
After a bright start, the Greenbacks were beaten by an untidy 40th minute goal that again must be attributed to a goalkeeping lapse.
Tom Cross, recalled for Jamie Brassington, failed to gather a corner to the near post, it struck the bar and the ball fell kindly for ex-Greenback NIKKI PRESTON to stab it home from four yards.
Rugby thrived on their good fortune to boost their own play-off hopes, and deservedly avenge their 4-1 defeat at the Oval on Boxing Day.
The Valley’s margin of victory would have been greater but for two superb pieces of defending by Greenbacks stalwarts Ian Roper and Chris Tullin.
Roper emerged from nowhere to boot the ball away from the feet of Seb Lake-Gaskin who broke free and seemed certain to add to Rugby’s goal a minute earlier.
Tullin repeated a similar feat mid-way through the second-half when he raced back to clear after Robbie Banks ran towards an open net in a breakaway.
Bedworth lacked sparkle in attack even with the 28-goal strike pairing of Ashley Robinson and Mitchell Piggon restored in favour of ex-Leamington duo Luke Corbett and Mark Bellingham.
Piggon waited until the last 15 minutes for his first opportunity when his close range drive was deflected for a corner with goalkeeper Dave Bevan going the other way.
Bevan denied Ashley Spencer early on with a fingertip save to keep out a 20-yard drive but really the former Greenbacks goalkeeper was seldom tested on his way to his fourth successive clean sheet.
