Colts 25- Selkirk 47
Colts come out fighting against the league leaders
The Colts entertained league leader Selkirk at Scremerston on what were perfect conditions for rugby.
Selkirk scored in the first minute when the defence backed off the strong running Selkirk centres. A second score soon followed after a punt deep in to the Berwick 22 and following a mix-up the on rushing Selkirk backs scrambled over to score.
The Colts then started to put some phases of play together and opened their account following an off-side infringement. Jack Learmonth slotted the penalty to reduce the deficit.
Further scores followed for Selkirk again through backing off and through a ragged defensive line. HT 3-26
After words of encouragement at half time the Colts came out a different side.
First on the score sheet was David Ainslie following a turn-over at the break-down on the Selkirk 22. A dash for the line and dive over gave the Colts the lift they needed.
Selkirk then replied with a score following a charge down in the Berwick 22.
Back the Colts came with an individual try from Ollie Warner. A blind-side break from a scrum on the Selkirk 10 he shrugged off a number of tackles to dive in. Learmonth converted.
Selkirk lifted their game and scored after some poor tackling allowed their centre to go under the posts. However, this then lifted the Colts with Warner breaking from the Selkirk 22 to again muscle his way over the line.
The Colts had their tails up now and enjoyed long spells of possession but were unable to add to their try count.
Against the run of play Selkirk scored in the last minute to make the final score Colts 25 Selkirk 47.
This really was a game of two halves with the Colts really showing the home crowd what they are capable of in the second period. The second half performance against the league leaders is something the lads need to now carry in to the next run of matches against mid table opposition.
The scrum was excellent with the big Berwick pack really getting stuck in to the Selkirk side. The U19 scrum rule variation of 1.5m max scrum push really works against the Colts but their power is clear for all to see.
Next up PSA at home. All support welcome.
