Beverley Braves under 9s got their season under way in a hastily arranged friendly against a Lambwath side seriously short on numbers, meaning 4 brave Braves had to play for the opposition in each half.
It was a good first introduction to rugby league for new boys Mathew Shirley and Reece Wallen who effortlessly slotted into the side with some strong running and not shying away in defence.
Will Cohen carried on his try scoring exploits from last year, carrying off the star of the match award after going over the stripe 5 times with some great evasive running.
He wasn’t the only boy to impress however with Adam Greenwood, Tom Nuttall and Lewis Bradley all going well with livewire Bryan Usher doing everything but score in a busy display for both sides.
In defence Isaac Merryweather put his body on the line as usual with some crunching hits but it was Shamus Blades who was awarded the top tackler trophy for his work rate and technique.
Other try scorers on the night were Charlie Gay and Alex Nuttall who both impressed with some good work.
There is plenty of improvement to come but the lads should be pleased with how they have started the season.
Coach Craig Collins said ‘‘No conqueror ever believed his victory was due to chance’’
