Bexhill United Ladies suffered a costly defeat to fellow league strugglers Aylesford on Sunday.

In a must win game for both teams, Aylesford started brighter and placed Bexhill under pressure in the opening stages. Early corners tested the hosts, Michelle Compton and Laura Bolton winning vital aerial challenges to restrict Aylesford’s attack. At the other end, Bolton was the first to test the visiting number 1. After Fay Denyer rode a challenge, Bolton’s snap shot needed a fine top corner save to prevent Bexhill taking the lead. After passages of possession from both sides an unfortunate goalkeeping error from Hayley Calder gave Aylesford the breakthrough on the 25 minute mark when she inadvertently pushed a cross inside the post. However, the momentum only stayed with Aylesford for 4 minutes, as their goalkeeper was unable to hold a fierce low drive from Bolton and Zoe Jackson was on hand to fire home the parry. Bexhill finished the half arguably slightly on top, however solid defending from Aylesford prevented any further meaningful chances to capitalise.
After the restart, Aylesford immediately set about taking hold of the game. Bexhill had to endure sustained periods of Aylesford possession in their defending third, together with a strong wind, however meaningful efforts on target were sparing. Corners were their main threat, with Nicky Pym saving Bexhill on the line after an inch perfect delivery just after the hour mark. The introduction of Lucy Knight provided a wide outlet for Bexhill and whilst a prolonged period of possession failed to result in a goal bound effort the follow up corner gave Bexhill the break. Knight’s cross was bravely met by Carrie Burke 6 yards out and Bexhill led for the first time in the fixture with 20 minutes remaining. In the initial minutes that followed the hosts appeared to relax into the fixture, however the final 10 proved disastrous. After a long drop kick from the Aylesford number 1, a catalogue of errors from Bexhill allowed the Aylesford striker time and space to strike from the edge of their area, the low effort clipped the inside of the post and spun along the goal line before going in. 4 minutes later the result was secured when Aylesford converted a corner with a strong, well placed header.

Whilst neither team overly deserved the win, Aylesford’s grit and determination ensured they took all three points and one step closer to safety leaving Bexhill with a large task ahead.

Bexhill return to action in a fortnight when they travel to Crawley Wasps.
