It mattered not really that the ref decided enough was enough even tho there was a healthy eight minutes left to play, as it might have felt slightly disrespectful for one of the teams to snatch a late winner if the fully allotted 90 minutes had been allowed to be played.

As, for some unexplainable reason, the camaraderie between these two clubs, so far apart geographically, that has developed over the past few seasons is testament to what non league football should be all about.

Many (very vocal) opposition fans making the extremely long trek to North Devon to watch their local club fulfil a meaningless end of season fixture, being made to feel welcome by their hosts, and enjoying harmless banter throughout (and after) the game, promotes in excess what non-league football was designed to originally achieve.

It is a great shame that Step 3 football will, for the next season anyhow, be without the positives a small rural club such as Bideford brings to the party. But if rumours are to be believed, plans are already well underway in plotting a way back in to that division - something now that the club have experienced, want to rekindle at the earliest opportunity.

The game itself was goalless. There were few chances for either side. But it didn't really matter.

Highlight of the afternoon probably goes to referee Robert Dabbs, who was without doubt one of the most switched on officials seen at the Sports Ground for many a moon. A credit to the 'men in black'.
