BIDEFORD 1 WIMBORNE TOWN 2
Bideford slipped to their third home defeat of the season at the hands of Wimborne Town on Saturday.
Craig Duff put The Robins in front but goals from Luke Burbidge and James Stokoe gave the Dorset side the three points.
Wimborne started the better despite Craig Duff heading over from a Matt Bye cross after seven minutes. Then at the other end Matty Oldring saw a header deflected wide from a corner, Scott Beattie had to race back to deny Luke Holmes who was through on goal and Steve Oliver made a good save from Holmes after a lovely flick by Louis Kellaway. Ryan Turner almost caught Wimborne keeper Gerald Benfield off his line with a 30 yard lob before Bideford took the lead somewhat against the run of play after 19 minutes. Sean Downing lifted the ball into the area from the right which Duff brought down with his back to goal and shot left footed on the turn low past Benfield. The goal scorer unfortunately had to leave the field due to injury four minutes later and was replaced by Kevin Squire.
The visitors were not deterred after falling behind as Jack Lovell forced a good save from Oliver before Burbidge equalised a minute later. Luke Holmes curled a teasing ball to the back post from the left and Burbidge finished well at the back post. Bideford fought back as Bye and Downing had shots saved by Benfield but The Magpies could well have been in front before the interval. Holmes crossed again from the left and this time Lovell rose to power a header back off the post.
Bideford improved in the second half but lacked a real threat in the final third. Kevin Squire saw an effort blocked in front of goal just before the hour but two minutes later Bideford were behind. Burbidge’s free kick from the right was swept home well by James Stokoe from eight yards out but all too easily from a Bideford point of view. Wimborne looked comfortable from that point on with the exception of two big opportunities where The Robins could have snatched a point in the final ten minutes. Tucker struck a free kick from 25 yards which was blocked and the ball fell to Downing eight yards out but his strike was repelled by a last ditch block. Downing then collected a Tucker cross on the right side of the box and squared for Ryan Turner but the striker was unable to turn the ball home from close range.
