Rossendale 40 - 10 BPFC
Birkenhead Park's poor form continued in National 3 North as promotion chasing Rossendale won with something to spare at Marl Pitts on Saturday.
The game evened out for a spell in the second half but a further home try kept Rossendale in the driving seat. With ten minutes still remaining Park produced the try of the match and probably of the season as well as far as Park were concerned.
A cross kick by a Rossendale forward was retrieved by winger Rob Houliston on his own line, he then turned and beat the Rossendale attackers before launching Greg hughes up the wing. Good interplay between Hughes, scrum half Sam Chidley and Jack Ashcroft progressed the move deep into home territory before Houliston finished off the move he had started for a great try. Dave Hall converted to give Park some hope but it was Rossendale who moved up a gear to claim two further tries and the bonus point in the losing stages.
Team Manager George Pollock said " we ended up being well beaten but nevertheless there were some positives to the display. It was good to have Jack Ashcroft back in the pack and Sam Chidley did well when he came on. Rob Houliston's try was a great score but unfortunately it came too late to make a difference to the outcome."
The Park Panthers trounced Vagabonds Ladies 85-0 in the RFUW league but they still have ground to make up on leaders Eccles at the top of the table. The Park Wanderers lost a thriller 24-21 in the last minute against their main rivals for the University of Salford Division 1 title Wilmslow. Wilmslow are now in pole position but Park have a game in hand.
This Saturday Park take on Burnage in National 3 North at the Upper Park, kick off 3pm.
