Birkenhead Park
Sat 9 Dec 14:00 - Northern Division - Northern Premier Full time

One that got away!

Birkenhead Park only had themselves to blame for not securing their first away win of the season as they declined a simple penalty kick in the dying moments which would have brought victory in favour of trying to secure a fourth try.
Park had recovered magnificently from a 19-3 deficit and the game was theirs for the taking before the error of judgement deprived Park of the spoils and left them with a single bonus point.
Park’s season has gained renewed impetus with the arrival of new recruits in the form of back Chris McNoe, who has family connections in the area, and fellow New Zealander prop Liam Sharples both from Otago. In addition brothers Will and Luke Titherington have switched from Lymm to provide renewed firepower in the backs and back row man Ben Marsh has resumed after injury following his summer move from New Brighton.
Dave Hall opened the scoring for Park with a penalty after three minutes but Kendal took the lead against the run of play with a Glen Weightman try. In a competitive first half there was no more scoring until scrum half Dini Noyo crossed just before half time with Weightman adding the extras to put the home team 12-3 ahead.
Park went further behind when Martin Woof finished off a long range effort with Weightman again converting. The score was harsh on Park but the visitors came storming back with tries from winger McNoe and centre Oli Whorton. Kendal responded with a penalty from substitute Chris Park but Park maintained their momentum with a third try through Adam Wellington to set up the dramatic finale.
Director of Rugby Martin O’Keefe said “ we literally threw the game away when it was there for the taking. Nevertheless I was delighted with the way we competed and the new players made a big difference.”
This Saturday Park welcome Rossendale for the final league match of the year and will be hoping to go into the Christmas break on a high note. The match will be preceded by a tribute lunch to Park stalwart Bob Lloyd who died last month.
