WARRINGTON 12 BIRKENHEAD PARK 29
Birkenhead Park continued their unbeaten start to the year with an impressive bonus point victory at Warrington.
It was a dream start for Jack Lavin on his return from Caldy as he finished in style after good work by Matt Walls to score the opening try after only five minutes play.
Park had first use of the strong wind and pinned Warrington in their own half with Rob Doolan claiming the second try following a driving maul, Dave Hall converted to put Park ahead 12-0. Warrington lost a prop to the sin bin and Park took full advantage as centre Joe Spencer’s mazy run saw him touch down under the posts with Hall again converting.
Park were 19-0 ahead at half time but had to play into the gale and Warrington put themselves back in contention with three Wood penalties in the third quarter. The Park defence held firm and Birkenhead then reasserted their authority as Rob Doolan confirmed the bonus point with his second try. Wood kicked a fourth home penalty but hooker Pete Doolan had the final say with the fifth try five minutes before the end as Park secured a convincing win.
Park Director of Rugby Martin O’Keefe said “ We scored five tries to nil and that is no mean feat at Warrington. I was delighted with the performance of Jack Lavin, he was the man of the match but again it was all round team work which earned us another victory”.
Park face a crunch match on Saturday when second place Kirkby Lonsdale visit the Upper Park, 2.15 kick off. Kirkby Lonsdale are only one point behind Park with both sides in winning form and whoever wins will be in pole position in the North 1 West promotion stakes.
